Jockey Dom Tourneur has been thrilled with the condition taken by Hucklebuck in his two runs this time and is confident the Group 1 winner will be a picture of fitness when he lines up for Saturday’s 2016 Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.

Hucklebuck was unlucky to miss virtually the entire 2015 racing calendar through injury but displayed his class when returning this time for a credible fourth in the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) on January 23rd; progressing to a particularly impressive third in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) a fortnight ago after leaving from the awkward barrier 18.

Tourneur told Racing Ahead he was pleased with the performance mustered by the talented son of Elvstroem last time and revealed he will look to take a position close to the pace in the 2016 Futurity Stakes from barrier 4.

“It was a tremendous run and had he drawn a gate, he probably would have been a lot closer,” Tourneur said.

“He still lacked a little bit of fitness in the final 100m and has probably just needed those couple of runs to come up this prep.

“He went into this prep probably just a little bit bigger and grosser than how we normally have him, but he’s tightened right up now.

“He’s looking terrific and is toned down and will be right to go come Saturday.

“As we’ve seen previously he can race up on speed. We’ll probably have him closer to the speed.”

Hucklebuck has been the stable star for leading South Australian trainer Phillip Stokes since his competitive debut in 2013; posting a commendable eight wins and three minors through only sixteen starts.

Undoubtedly finding career-best form to date through the 2014 edition of the Spring Carnival, Hucklebuck won the Listed Durbridge Stakes (1200m) at his local Morphettville course first-up; progressing to success in the Group 3 Yellowglen Stakes (1400m) before posting a maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m). is currently offering the best 2016 Futurity Stakes odds, for which Hucklebuck can be taken at a generous quote of $6.50 for success.
